Eupithecia tamarisciata (Freyer, [1836])
Eupithecia fraxinata Crewe, 1863

Status and ecology:

Nationally larvae feed on three main foodplants but the exact status of moths produced is still a matter of authoritative dispute with suggestions of races, subspecies or full species. Here they are treated as races. At least two races of this Pug occur in Sussex. One is ash-feeding generally associated with woodland on or near downs (innotana) and f.fraxinata which consumes sea buckthorn on sand dunes. The Downland Race: Resident. Normally occurs singly or sparingly on chalk rarely elsewhere. Sparsely distributed on downs and very local and irregular in appearance. Double-brooded in overlapping flights which appear mainly from late May to late August. Larval foodplant has not been determined in Sussex but is presumed to be ash as in other counties. The Sand-dune Race: Resident. Occurs usually sparingly but is occasionally fairly common. Very local and distinctly episodic in numbers and only known near Rye. Double-brooded, flying mainly from second week of May to late June, and again from early August to early September. Larvae feed on sea-buckthorn. (Pratt, 2011).
