Status and ecology:

The adults of this resident species usually occur sparingly on open and waste ground by day and at mv light, although they are occasionally fairly common to common in a few places; larvae are sometimes common or even very common. Generally distributed in large areas, but all stages are very local and distinctly episodic in numbers. Single-brooded, flying mainly from late April to mid August, occasionally from the second week of April or to mid September. Larvae feed on ragwort, hoary ragwort and (rarely) on groundsel.
